References to the Mishnah are given by the abbreviation of the name of the Tractate followed by the chapter and halakha numbers. Ex.: Ber 5:1.

References to the Tosefta are given in the same way but they are preceded by the abbreviation Tos. Ex.: Tos Ber 5:1.

References to the Babylonian Talmud are given by the abbreviation of the name of the Tractate followed by the folio and column. The reference is preceded by the letter b. Ex.: b Ber 12 a.

References to the Jerusalem Talmud are given by the abbreviation of the name of the Tractate followed by the chapter, the halakhah, the folio and the column. The reference is preceded by the letter j. Ex.: j Sab 16 1,15 c

References to the Baraitot, or the tannaitic traditions contained in the Talmud are preceded by the indication Bar.

2. MIDRASHÎM.

References to the Midrash Rabbah are given by the biblical abbreviation followed by a capital R, then by the chapter and paragraph number. Ex.: Gn R 1:10 (Midrash Rabbah of Genesis, chapter 1, Paragraph 10).

References to the other Midrashîm are given by their full title, without abbreviation.
