II. « THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE TEMPLE »
While we gaze on «the far side of the Jordan», where appeared «the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world», «the Chosen One of God», Jesus, Son of Mary and King of Israel, the Israelo-Palestinian war continues to rage “on this side of the Jordan”. “The third Jewish temple in Jerusalem has incensed the Palestinians”, was the headline in La Croix for 30 July 2001. There was a photograph of Jews praying before the Wailing Wall, which the Israeli police were forced to clear: «The order to invade the Esplanade of the Mosques in Jerusalem was given after Palestinians had started throwing stones at devout Jews down below. Eighteen Palestinians were injured in the clashes and fifteen Israeli police officers. The Palestinians were protesting against the symbolic ceremony of the laying the first stone of the third Jewish Temple, a ceremony which had been organised by Israeli extremists just a few hundred metres away from the Esplanade of the Mosques.» It should be noted that this ceremony had been authorised by Ariel Sharon’s government. It was the logical continuation of his visit of 25 September 2000 to the Esplanade of the Mosques where he burst upon the scene accompanied by uniformed soldiers bearing weapons. But what were his intentions? It is an age-old problem.
On July 4 and 5 that year there had been held in Rome the seventh meeting of the Islamic-Catholic Liaison Committee on the theme: “Religion and dialogue between civilisations at a time of globalisation.” In their joint final press statement, the committee set out the principle that «religious values should be the fundamental starting point» for «preserving human dignity, peaceful coexistence between peoples and the protection of the environment». Application: the committee condemns «the violations of the holy places and places of worship which are taking place in certain parts of the world». Hence our question: Does the construction of a third Jewish temple, following that of Solomon destroyed in 586 BC and that of Herod destroyed in 70 AD, constitute «a violation of the holy places» or, on the contrary, their restoration? Another subsidiary question: Does the construction of a mosque at Nazareth, opposite the Basilica of the Annunciation, constitute «a violation of the holy places» of the different religions, or a legitimate exercise of religious liberty? Excavation work began on 12 November 2001. The Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, an organisation charged by the Catholic Church with preserving the Holy Places, «deplores the situation in a press release where it recalls that Yasser Arafat and the Egyptian Imam Tantaoui Al Azhar have criticised this project devised by extremist islamists» (La Croix, 14 November). Arafat, the Palestinian “authority”, may “criticise” but he does nothing... And the Hebrew State? The same. Yasser Arafat and Ariel Sharon do at least share one common objective: to rid Christians from their country. That is why today more than ever the Crusaders are our models: they established a Latin Kingdom in Jerusalem to protect pilgrimages to the Holy Sepulchre, the only real “Holy Land” to have survived in Jerusalem, for Jesus was buried there on the evening of Good Friday, and from thence He rose on the third day. The Esplanade of the Temple, on the other hand, is nothing, for it was from there that Jesus drove out those who were selling cattle, sheep and doves, scattering the money-changers’ coins and overturning their tables (Jn 2.13-16). One day, «one of His disciples said to Him: “Look at the size of those stones, Master!” And Jesus said to him, “You see these great buildings? Not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.”» (Mk 13.1-2) And they asked Him when all this would happen. Jesus replied: «I tell you solemnly, this generation will not pass away before all these things have taken place.» (Mk 13.30) Such words will not pass away either, as the future will demonstrate. Let us see what we can already know. Forty years later, the space of a «generation», the Romans destroyed the Temple, leaving not one stone standing on another. All that remained in place were «the foundations» (in Arabic: ’al-qawâ cida) of the immense esplanade built by Herod: the «Place of Abraham». |

Under Julian the Apostate (361-363), the Jews received permission from the Emperor to rebuild the Temple. But on 19 May 363 an earthquake halted the work which had begun on the 18th. There is such strong evidence for this prodigy that modern historians are unable to call it into question: «An earthquake and a fire issuing from the foundations arrested the barely started construction work, not only because they made it materially impossible to continue, but because they were seen as a divine punishment condemning the undertaking.» (Francoise Thelamon, Païens et chrétiens au quatrième siècle. L’apport de l’«Histoire ecclésiastique» de Rufin d’Aquilée, Études augustiniennes, 1981, p. 304) We must read Rufinus of Aquileia, who wrote in Latin at the beginning of the fifth century the first history of the Church in the fourth century, to understand the immense repercussions of these events on the men of that time: «And now on the night before the work began there occurred a violent earthquake. Not only were the foundation stones heaved up on all sides but almost every building on the site was demolished. The public porticos occupied by a large number of Jews involved in the construction work, collapsed and crushed all the Jews who were there. But when day broke, believing that they themselves had escaped the disaster, others ran up looking for those who had been buried under the debris. «There were some rooms buried deep in the
lower parts of the Temple, the entrance to which lay between two
porticos that had collapsed; there they arranged their tools and
everything else needed for the work. Suddenly, a ball of fire appeared
and, scouring the place, it shot about in all directions, burning and
killing the Jews who were there. This prodigy, repeating itself at
different times and at brief intervals throughout the day, put paid to
the temerity of these stubborn people with its avenging flames.»

Mount Moriah, situated on the northern side of the ancient city of Jerusalem, which Abraham, according to tradition, climbed with his son Isaac in order to offer him to God in sacrifice (Gn 22.2) One thousand years later, David bought this «threshing floor» from Araunah the Jebusite, there to build an altar and offer a sacrifice which won salvation for the city of Jerusalem (2 S 24.18-25). It was here that Solomon, David’s son, built the Temple (2 Ch 3.1). The Lord Himself consecrated this «House» (bayit) by setting His Name on it for ever (1 K 9.3). But Israel’s infidelity brought down upon her the terrible chastisement of complete destruction. On their return from Exile, the Israelites would build a more modest version of it, which King Herod took it upon himself to extend and embellish. Shortly after its completion, it was destroyed once and for all, leaving not «one stone on another», as Jesus had prophesied (Mk 13.2). Less than six centuries later, the Koran would proclaim that «Abraham will restore the foundations of the Temple (’al-qawâ cida mina l-bayti) with Ismael» (II 127). Today, the «Dome of the Rock» dominates the whole of Jerusalem, and the Esplanade of the Jewish Temple has become the sanctuary of Islam. The Jews only have access to the “Wailing Wall” seen here. |
Françoise Thelamon seeks an explanation for what she calls «the impossibility of rebuilding the Temple of Jerusalem»: the earthquake «may have caused an explosion of gas that had accumulated in an underground chamber, followed by a fire which would have destroyed materials and cost lives». Three hundred years later, – and indeed today as well! – the Arabs invade Jerusalem and construct their mosques on the esplanade... with fear and trembling, wondering whether fire will again spring forth from the “foundations”, ’al-qawâ cida! Indeed, the author of the Koran considers that «fire» is continually present in the «pit». But on this occasion it spared the children of Ismael, the Arabs, thanks to a «kindness» on God’s part: «Just when you had reached the edge of a pit [full] of fire, He spared you.» (Sura 3, verse 103; cf. our Translation and Systematic Commentary on the Koran, vol. II, p. 97-98; 185-186) The Koran is an imprescriptible witness to this...
Thus, the Arabs, the «children of Ismael», would succeed in «restoring the foundations (’al-qawâ cida) of the Temple» (3, 127), where the Jews, the «children of Israel», had failed (ibid, vol. I, p. 136 and 309). Today, the octagonal building called the “Dome of the Rock”, which goes back to the time of Abd el-Malik (685-705), dominates Jerusalem, and the gigantic esplanade built by Herod has become the sanctuary of Islam. As for the Jews, they can but weep... at the “Wailing Wall” down below. And as for Christians, all they can do is «take flight», following not only Our Lord’s counsel (Mt 24.16), but also and far more seriously His example when He returned «to the far side of the Jordan, to the place where John had first baptised, and stayed there» (Jn 10.40). Thus the quarrel between the «children of Ismael» and the «children of Israel» has continued for thirteen centuries, ever since a «large-tented Himyarite» conceived the idea of restoring «the House of Abraham» on its «foundations» (’al-qawâ cida), as is clearly spelled out in verse 127 of Sura 2, which we explained nearly fifteen years ago, well before the creation of Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network! The attempt to restore a Hebrew State in 1948 could only escalate this millenary quarrel to fever pitch, which is what we are witnessing today.
« A LARGE-TENTED HIMYARITE » Bin Laden was not in the caves of Tora Bora conquered by the anti-Taliban forces. «The hunt goes on», Tony Blair simply remarked, believing that the Al-Qaeda leader was still in Afghanistan. This is not the opinion of General Tommy Franks, Commander of the American military operations in Afghanistan. He even envisaged that Osama bin Laden had left the country. «If bin Laden is intelligent, he will have already crossed the border into Pakistan, considers Éric Dénécé, editor-in-chief of the French review Renseignement et Opérations spéciales. There are networks everywhere which are ready to help him», he assures us (La Croix, 18 Dec). We ourselves, and for some time now, have had our own idea. That bin Laden is «intelligent» is indubitable: it can be seen on his face. The name of his organisation alone is proof of a superior intelligence...! To have chosen the keyword which, in the Koran, expresses the millenary ambition of the Arabs, Abraham’s children by Ismael, can only be classed as a veritable inspiration. Inspired, bin Laden? Yes, undoubtedly. By what Spirit? To discern this, we must go back to the beginnings. The stroke of genius of the author of the Koran is to have stolen from Saint Paul all the power of his theological argumentation to demonstrate one thing only: the permanence of God’s covenant with Abraham and ISMAEL – Ismael, not Israel – the eponymous ancestor of the Arabs. To the Jews who prided themselves on the Law, Saint Paul opposed the promises made to Abraham 430 years before the Law was promulgated (Ga 3.17). In the same way, the author of the Koran maintains that before the covenant with the children of Israel which degenerated into «schism» setting the «Jews» against the «Nazoreans» as he calls the Christians, there existed the faith of the sons of Abraham, particularly those in slavery, the Ismaelites, the ancestors of the Arabs. Therefore, let the «House» (bayt), the «Place of Abraham» (maqâm ’ibrâhim), once again shine forth, according to the promise audaciously placed by the author in the mouth of God who foresaw the apostasy of the Jews and the Nazoreans! «Then, Abraham will re-establish the foundations (’al-qawâ cida) of the Temple with Ismael.» And the world will finally know peace. If this claim were a pure fabrication without any biblical foundation, it would have sunk into ridicule, and would certainly not have succeeded in imposing itself as a divine revelation on a billion human beings. But it must be recognised that there is some truth in it, since the sign of the covenant was circumcision. Now, Ismael was circumcised before Isaac (Gn 17.23-26). Moreover, did not Saint Paul himself write that the first covenant was attached to Sinai and that «it was Hagar, since Sinai is in Arabia» (Ga 4.24-25)? The first covenant is Hagar, mother of Ismael, the ancestor of the Arabs... Such is the central, fundamental and deeply anti-Christian assertion of the Koran. To the benefit of Ismael and his race, it nullifies the exclusive election, the singular privilege of Isaac, by claiming that the bitter division which arose between the Jewish and Christian religions represents a «posterior schism» to the first covenant of a God who does not change. It was not the author’s intention, therefore, to found a third religion, but to abolish the other two by restoring what he regarded as the one true Abrahamic tradition. In a postface to the first volume of our translation of the Koran, the Abbé de Nantes advanced the following hypothesis: «A large-tented Himyarite – permit me to run ahead of you and thus imagine his ethnic and moral identity –, a man of letters, a monk, educated at the best schools, both Jewish and Christian, felt an inspiration, a call, a compulsion to manipulate Saint Paul’s demonstration and turn it to the advantage of Ismael. He believed this would greatly aid fraternal peace in which he foresaw the accomplishment, this time realisable and imminent, of God’s plan.» (p. 338-339) «Himyar», the Raydan of the titulature of Šamir Yuhariš (280 AD; cf. our vol. I, p. 285 sq.), is the name of «the Happy Arabia» of old, which gradually supplanted and annexed the rival kingdoms of «Sheba, Hadramout and Yemenat» to the south of the Arabian peninsula, achieving the political unity «of these Arabs in both mountain and plain». Converted to Christianity in the fourth century of our era by a Roman mission, this rich region, a refined civilization which went back to the time of the Queen of Sheba, was the theatre of a fierce rivalry between Roman colonisers, who were already Christian, and secular Jewish influence. Osama bin Laden, the «Saudi billionaire» of the twenty-first century followed the same path as the original «large-tented Himyarite»: «Bin Laden’s economic and financial empire was created at the beginning of the century by the patriarch, Mohammed Awad, who was born at Hadramaut in Yemen and who in 1928 would settle in Saudi Arabia. Very early on the family was closely involved with the emergence and formation of the Wahhabite kingdom by King Abd al-Aziz.» (Jean-Charles Brisard and Guillaume Dasquié, “Ben Laden, la vérité interdite”, Denoël, 2001, p. 149) Thirteen centuries after the first push which saw the Bedouins of Arabia setting out to conquer Jerusalem in order to «re-establish the foundations (’al-qawâ cida) of the Temple with Ismael», the name of bin Laden’s networks, ’al-qaeda, once again proclaims the same intention, founded on the superiority of the race of the children of Ismael. At a time when Judaism and its successor Christianity, both characterised by degeneracy, are in the process of disappearing, Islam, roused by Osama bin Laden, has again set out to conquer Jerusalem and there to «restore the foundations of the Temple». And everything else is nothing but literature. The American magazine Time had announced its intention to designate Osama bin Laden «man of the year», a long way out in front of New York’s Mayor Giuliani. Osama bin Laden, emblematic figure of 2001... Might he be the Antichrist? Finally, Time magazine retreated before the risk of losing so many subscribers... But it should be recognised that its first impulse was not unfounded...
And who will defend us against this terrifying danger of a new Hegira veritably arisen from hell? Who? Certainly not the Americans, despite the terrible effectiveness of their new war machine forged during the Eighties, while the USSR was burning itself out in the arms race. At that time they supported Afghan terrorism against Russia... Today, the terrorism of bin Laden and his network Al-Qaeda has turned against them and holds them in check! Not only have the “boys” failed to return for Christmas, but George Bush has been robbed of his victory by the escape of Osama bin Laden and his senior officers, despite the capture of Tora Bora, his last known refuge. To top this misfortune, after Paul Wolfovitz, the Under Secretary for Defence, had announced that the leader of Al-Qaeda «had perhaps died in the bombing of Tora Bora», the latter resurfaced in a video recording broadcast on 26 December by the Al Jazeera channel. And as confirmation of Osama bin Laden’s resurrection, an Afghan dignitary announced on the 27th that he had taken refuge in Pakistan with a fundamentalist leader, a recent ally of the Taliban! Every day the Americans prove their inability to act as peacemakers among those groups dedicated to self-destruction. Take for example the other day: on Christmas Eve a convoy of sixty tribal leaders took a minor road on their way to Kabul to attend the appointment of the head of the temporary government, the Pashtun Hamid Karzai. The convoy was attacked by the US Air Force on the strength of information indicating that Taliban leaders, including bin Laden himself, were in the convoy. Apparently several tribal leaders opposed to Karzai deliberately misled the Americans and tricked the convoy into turning off the main road. However, let us take care not to limit our accusations to the Americans alone. More than ever, even after the collapse of the USSR, these lines by the Abbé de Nantes clarify the present situation: «Yesterday, Russia appeared to us to be an essentially satanic people, the scourge of mankind and we, the democratic West, although abandoned, enslaved to every one of our passions and willingly subjected to the powers of freemasonry and its atheistic capitalo-socialism, flattered ourselves on being the Free World, nations blessed by God, assured of His protection against every assault of the Enemy.» (Russia before and after 1983, English CRC no 153, December 1982, p. 21). Considered in the light of Fatima, «Russia appears to us under a very different light, continues the Abbé de Nantes, as a people possessed by Satan. I deliberately say possessed because possession is the capture and oppression of a creature by the demon despite itself. This terrible state is not in itself in any way blameworthy, but is often on the contrary a meritorious and mystical martyrdom. And it depends on God alone whether this state should last or disappear in an instant. Whereas we, the West, the free Roman Church, Pope, bishops, people, rebels to God’s commands and to the requests of our Mother, revolutionaries and reformers, proud of our faith in Man, corrupt and apostate, we are in reality the willingly blind subjects of a diabolic infestation, that is to say of a diabolical presence and power that is desired, maintained and cherished by the creature who voluptuously abandons himself to Satan for the satisfaction of his cupidity, his ambition and his monstrous pride.» The results are there for all to see: a world torn by conflict, from Paris to Sydney, passing through Belfast and Buenos Aires. If Blessed Pius IX could describe the communards of 1871 as «demons straight from hell», what would he say today of the arson attacks spreading through the towns of France? In Nantes, on the night of 2 to 3 January, eighteen cars were set on fire in the popular city of Bellevue. In 2001, five hundred vehicles were set alight in this town of six hundred thousand inhabitants, and the figure grows year on year because such crimes go unpunished. |

« the foundations » (’al-qawâ cida)
The covers of our translation of the Koran, below, reveal the Hebraic origin of the Koranic language. In beautiful square writing, the Hebrew expression and, in red, its Arabic transcription: Volume I: haweî šelîm, «be perfect!» (Aramaic version of Gn 17.1) transposed into ’aslim (Sura II, verse 131), the divine word which founds the covenant between God and Abraham and his descendants. The word islâm derives from this, designating the Moslem religion, i.e. “perfect”...! Volume II: the name of Mohammed, used by the author of the Koran to designate himself, in Sura III, verse 144, is the transposition of the mysterious name given in the Bible to the prophet Daniel: ’iš hamudôt, «man of predilection» (Dn 10, 11 and 19). Volume III: «Elohîm», the biblical name for God transposed into Arabic (III, 26; V, 114) with an intensification of the lâm, because the author of the Koran interpreted the first two Hebrew consonants la (’èl) as an article. The word qawâ‘id (Sura II, verse 127) illustrates the same truth: the word is transposed from the Aramaic qawaw‘ad, «to fix»; it designates the «foundations» of the House of Abraham on which the author of the Koran founds islâm .
