THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL

PASTORAL CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH
IN THE MODERN WORLD (1)

(GAUDIUM ET SPES
7 DECEMBER 1965)

BY THE ABBÉ DE NANTES

FIRST PART
THE CHURCH AND MAN’S CALLING

What does the Church think of the situation of men as it has been described? A summary introduction informs us in three paragraphs how she takes charge of the present situation, first and sovereignly as « the People of God », which lies within the world, then and oddly enough, as the Council, which was created and brought into the world to support with its zeal this People of God. This it does in such a manner that the world welcomes its spiritual, even charismatic, animation that it offers it and that a close symbiosis from one to the other may be beneficial to them both. This is what our author – to some extent a prophet of happiness! – announces in advance, as a certain triumph, as you are going to read.

TO ANSWER THE CALLINGS OF THE SPIRIT.

I was firmly determined to pursue this morning my critical reading with serenity, to show respect and goodwill to the Council, the collegial author of this Constitution and the rest… Nevertheless, I read this first paragraph with an unconquerable feeling of illness. The pathos is overdone; it is tedious nonsense in which all the words, all the stylistic devices are fraught with a meaning, an intention that is Gnostic, that is to say, dark, hidden, although apparently Catholic. You do not believe me? Neither do I. My heart and my fear are unable to consent to the dictates of my reason. I would need twenty pages for these eight lines. It is disgraceful! And the rest perpetrates what I must indeed call: heresy!

In order to explain all this literary and theological fraud, I must pursue in accordance with my method – inelegant, I must admit – of reproducing the full text but inserting within it my criticism between parentheses as seems necessary to me.

11. § 1. « Motivated by this faith… » The first ambiguity is certainly not a question of the Creed to which the Catholic unconditionally adheres in order to find in it all the truths and laws required for his eternal salvation. No, it is the Protestant, modern, and Modernist faith, which is indifferent to the dogmas and doctrines of the various « Christian » confessions, yet full of confidence, optimism, energy and generosity, and thus ready to do something in order to…

« believe that it is led by the Lord’s Spirit, who fills the earth and endeavours (!) to decipher (!) authentic signs of God’s presence and purpose in the happenings, needs and desires of our age... » Imagine this main sewer, these media of social communication clogged with all the useless vomit of the masters and impious executors of all the corruptors of this time! – I would not take a sip of it… « The People of God » drink it all in with their eyes and ears… Horror!

The abuse of Scripture is blatant: « The Spirit of the Lord fills the world », according to the Book of Wisdom, but He does not fill human beings! The inspired scribe could obviously not have said such an idiotic remark, two centuries before Pentecost! On the contrary, the context affirms that this creative Spirit who sculpts and maintains the world in motion, hears everything, but not with the Council’s meaning. He hears, but not to admire everything that the people, even were it the « People of God », might relate, but on the contrary in order to sanction the great number of errors and impieties that the wicked dare to utter! So, the Council…?

« For Wisdom is a spirit, a friend to man, though she will not pardon the words of a blasphemer. Because God is the witness of his inmost self and the sure observer (in Greek, the épiscope! from which is derived the word and thus the functional definition of the bishops: to observe their peoples, and particularly their blasphemous or absurd remarks!) of his heart and the listener to his tongue… » Go see what follows, I spare the bishops of the Council who are still alive this (Ws 1.6-11)!

6. For Wisdom is a spirit, a friend to man, though she will not pardon the words of a blasphemer. Because God is the witness of his inmost self and the sure observer of his heart and the listener to his tongue.

7. For the Spirit of the Lord fills the world, is all-embracing, and knows what man says.

8. Therefore no one who utters wicked things can go unnoticed, nor will chastising condemnation pass him by.

9. For the devices of the wicked man shall be scrutinised, and the sound of his words shall reach the LORD, for the chastisement of his transgressions;

10. Because a jealous ear hearkens to everything, and discordant grumblings are no secret.

11. Therefore guard against profitless grumbling, and from calumny withhold your tongues; for a stealthy utterance does not go unpunished, and a lying mouth slays the soul.

« … in which this People has a part along with other men... » Alas! Alas! What servitude! Into what bondage has it fallen! No, the conciliar bishops are involved in all kinds of mixing of the sexes that engender the adultery of which the Old and New Testament prophets – the true ones – have repeated to us that they were the means invented by the devil to put the just, the innocent, the saints with the corrupt world for the perdition of all!

« … to decipher authentic signs of God's presence and purpose... For faith… » I remind you that it is not the Catholic Faith; it is the sentiment of the divine in man and all expressions of the divine that deserve to be called works of the Spirit in each and every person.

« … throws a new light on everything, manifests God’s design for man’s total vocation, and thus directs the mind to solutions which are fully... »

Be seated, for I fear that this will make you swoon. Slowly re-read this sentence, and when you come to the ellipses, finish the sentence. – Well, let us see: solutions that are fully holy, or heavenly, or… divine! It is a question of revelations dealing with the divine will, of an excellent « new light », the like of which the Church has never yet experienced, « on man’s total vocation » the vocation of each and every man! Well, no! and on the contrary… the Church had supernatural, heavenly, holy, disincarnated solutions that are incomprehensible to the world, in short: divine! This time, it is the people’s turn to speak, and they discern in the main sewer of the media of social communication something that the world no longer even expected from the Church: « solutions which are fully human »!

With their « faith », their being « led by the Lord’s Spirit », the 8 p.m. news bulletin and the La Croix newspaper, the people of God have enough to discern the signs of the times and God’s will.

§ 2. « This Council, first of all (?), wishes to assess in this light (this « new light » that has never been seen or identified by anyone) those values which are most highly prized today (everyone’s opinion) and to relate them to their divine source. » Picking trifecta winners, windsurfing, ballets roses, and revolution, all that is the human element that interests the Council (GS 1), but it comes from God! We always think infallibly of Doctor Knock: « Yes, yes, all of that is excellent, Baroness, but on condition that you undergo a thorough examination in my treatment clinic, that you submit yourself to the therapy that I will indicate to the qualified personnel, and then you will have, it is true, an excellent, clean bill of health! »

« Insofar as they stem from endowments conferred by God on man, these values (prized by everyone!) are exceedingly good (what a shambles!) ». First and foremost the atomic bomb due to the human genius of Einstein and, ex æquo, psychoanalysis, a creation of Freud’s genius, and AIDS, about which we are beginning to learn through what American sailor it came into the world, a gift of God if ever there was one! All this is very good (an implicit quotation of the Book of Genesis, in the chapter of the creation of the world by God). But as we know, « the creative energies » (GS 4, 2) linked to that of God, shares its excellence.

Nevertheless, would this restriction not be intended to reserve a little job for the mechanics before launching the new world: « Yet they are often wrenched (by whom?) from their rightful function by the taint in man’s heart (ah! oh!), and hence stand in need of purification. » If it amuses them, if it justifies their magnificent conciliar conference, we grant them that. But after what they themselves said about the excellence of man’s judgement in his own affairs, this declared need for episcopal control and ecclesiastical purifications will seem, when the time comes, to be an intolerable clerical intrusion, and a « return to the moral order » contrary to Vatican II’s promises.

§ 3. « What does the Church think of man? What needs to be recommended (sic!) for the upbuilding of contemporary society? What is the ultimate significance of human activity throughout the world? People are waiting for an answer to these questions. »

This is a pure invention of the bishops, who are paid to give answers. When I had read the questionnaire in Messages, the bulletin of the jec (Young Christian Students) in 1938, and I received from the dozen of Jecists of my class unintelligible grunts for every reply, well! I used to read the answer that the same issue gave, as is done with riddles and crossword puzzles, where it is, nevertheless, funnier. Having witnessed and powerlessly participated in the failure of the enormous system called “Specialised Catholic Action”, I could not have imagined that towards the end of my life I would see the same causes produce the same effects, the failure of the greatest Council and the largest assembly of all the most qualified officials that the Church counted.

« From the answers it will be increasingly clear that the People of God and the human race in whose midst it lives render service to each other (hey! the idea is taken from Charles Maurras, who read it in the writings of Mgr Freppel). Thus the mission of the Church will show its religious, and by that very fact (!), its supremely human (?!) character. (It is no longer Maurras’ thought but Marc Sangnier’s. What a fall!) »
